Treeloft Project

Inspired by the tranquility that hammocks bring to outdoor settings, Treeloft was conceived with a mission to provide a versatile solution for hammock enthusiasts. As well as addressing the challenges of finding the perfect hammock spot, Treeloft offers a harmonious solution that seamlessly blends nature, portability, and durability. Born out of the yearly Winsell Rotational Molding Product Design Competition, this project was a finalist of the 2023 competition.

Research and Problem Points

The initial step involved an exploration into the world of hammock relaxation and the challenges users face in finding the perfect spot. I learned quickly that an ideal location was harder to locate than I anticipated. Understanding the relationship between personal preference and the constraints of nature, it became clear that creating an accessible and versatile stand-in was required. Treeloft address these intricacies, offering a transformative solution to the conventional limitations of hammocking.

the right spot

A hammock requires strong trees that are not too close together or too far apart. This, in addition to personal preference, often makes it difficult to find the right spot to hang the hammock.

can get cold

In a hammock, you are surrounded by air on all sides. This will cause a person to lose heat quickly as the cold seeps in. Most people will bundle up to keep warm in their hammock.

weathering

Most people do not take the time to properly store the hammock after use. Damage from weather and sun will weaken the hammock. Overtime the fabric becomes vulnerable to breakage.

Ideation and Rough Sketches

The ideation and rough sketching phase of Treeloft's creation unfolds as a canvas of possibilities. In this stage, the design process is propelled by a myriad of ideas and quick exploratory sketches. The sketches are generally constrained by the possibilities offered by rotomolded plastic, as dictated by the Winsell Rotational Molding Product Design Competition. I played with concepts that not only captivated the eye but also adhere to the practical demands of the envisioned material.

Advanced Sketches

In the next phase of Treeloft's design journey, where inspiration and functionality converge. The sketches became detailed and practical representations of their ideas. This stage marks the transformation of ideation into form and tangible features. Innovative elements such as storage solutions to shield the fabric from the elements, adjustable height mechanisms for a customizable experience, and the incorporation of a fillable tank for stabilization. These ideas make Treeloft not just a design concept but a practical solution to elevate the outdoor hammocking experience.

Final design and Renders

The Treeloft design journey arrives with the rendering of its final form, a process executed with precision and creativity on the KeyShot platform. The three-dimensional model crafted in SolidWorks transforms into captivating images that breathe life into Treeloft's intention. This step represents the epitome of the design process, where the concept is translated into a visual narrative of final shots. These high-quality images serve not only as a testament to the aesthetics of Treeloft but as a powerful communication tool. The simulated appearance of speckled, recycled plastic adds a touch of eco-conscious sophistication. The convenient shelves allow for storage and protection of the hammock and other desired items. These details convey the innovation, functionality, and environmental consciousness woven into this inventive outdoor hammock stand.
